Details
Our 18mm thick moisture-resistant MDF boards are engineered to withstand humidity and dampness, making them ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and other high-moisture areas. Hydrophobic substances throughout the wood fibres create a water barrier that prevents swelling and rippling when exposed to splashes or high ambient moisture levels. Whether you're looking to craft bathroom vanities, install laundry room cabinetry, or build basement furnishings, our 18mm thick moisture-resistant MDF has you covered for your next project. Its durability and versatility bring the potential of medium-density fiberboard to damp environments.
While not completely waterproof, the 18mm MR MDF demonstrates significantly improved water resistance compared to standard MDF. It retains its smooth machinability while gaining enhanced dimensional stability. The internal moisture protection expands the possibilities for using 18mm MDF in wet applications like bathroom vanities, laundry cabinets, and basement build-outs.
With its slight green tint, our 18mm thick MR MDF offers a consistent, smooth surface that machines cleanly and finishes beautifully. The durability retains high bond strength for overlays and laminates, achieving a flawless painted or factory-finished look.
We can cut your 18mm moisture-resistant MDF sheet to your specific measurements, into a bespoke shape or drill holes in it ready for installation. With our customisable services, you can receive your wood sheet ready for whichever application you choose.
Applications
Our 18mm moisture-resistant MDF is ideal for many applications where high humidity is expected:
- Bathroom vanities and cabinets - The 18mm thickness provides durability while the MR construction resists swelling from humidity.
- Kitchen doors and shelving.
- Use 18mm MR MDF to construct desk table tops, shelves, and other furnishings needing moisture resistance.
- Garage storage and workbenches - Ideal for garage cabinetry, shelves, and workbench tops where condensation is common.
- Restaurant and bar areas - Use for cabinets, partitions, wainscoting, and table tops in humid restaurants/bars.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is moisture-resistant MDF?
With a slight green tint, water-resistant MDF, also known as MR MDF, contains a moisture-repellent resin that provides increased resistance to humidity. Waxes and resins create a water barrier within the wood fibres. As a result of this, our MR MDF is ideal for use in high-humidity areas or areas of high moisture.
What thickness do I need?
Thinner sheets, like 6mm and 9mm MR MDF, are good for lightweight panels, overlays and cabinet components. Medium thicknesses like 12mm and 18mm MR MDF are very versatile for furniture, cabinets, shelving and built-ins. The thickest 25mm MR MDF provides extra durability for heavy-duty furniture tops, worktops, and shelving.
Is all MDF moisture-resistant?
Not all MDF is moisture-resistant. MDF is a porous material, and moisture-resistant sheets prevent the MDF sheets from warping or being affected by moisture.
Can you paint moisture-resistant MDF?
Often chosen for its inexpensive cost to create furniture, MDF can be painted to add some character or personality to any piece. You can find out more in our guide: How to Paint MDF
How do you waterproof MDF panels?
Moisture-resistant MDF sheets are already resistant to moist areas and humidity, however, you can improve their hydrophobia by coating them in an appropriate waterproof primer or paint.
How does MR MDF compare to plywood for moisture resistance?
Plywood uses waterproof glues but can still separate when wet. MR MDF retains its form and strength better than wood-based boards. We offer a range of marine plywood boards if MDF isn't suitable for your project.
