Frequently Asked Questions
What is fire-rated MDF?
Fire-rated MDF is a medium-density fiberboard product that has been treated with fire-retardant chemicals to achieve a flame spread rating. This makes it more resistant to catching fire and slowing the spread of flames.
What are the benefits of using fire-rated MDF?
The main benefits are increased fire safety and meeting building code requirements for projects like commercial buildings, schools, hospitals etc. The fire retardant treatment provides an added layer of fire protection.
Does fire-rated MDF look different from regular MDF?
Generally, fire-rated MDF has a similar smooth sanded surface and finish as regular MDF. Our flame-rated MDF is slightly darker in colour to our standard MDF boards.
Is MDF fire-resistant?
Our flame retardant MDF are non-loading bearing sheets with improved properties at resisting fire spreading. Our boards have a C fire rating and can slow the spread of fire for up to 30 minutes.
Is MDF more flammable than wood?
MDF is flammable but difficult to ignite. Flame retardant MDF also slows the spread of the fire. Dust from wood may ignite at temperatures greater than 204ºC and when in a high concentration in the air may spontaneously explode.
Can fire-rated MDF be stained or painted?
Yes, fire-retardant MDF can be stained, painted, laminated, wrapped, etc. just like standard MDF. The fire retardant treatment will not interfere with finishes.
Does the fire rating last forever?
The fire retardant penetrates throughout the panel, providing inherent fire resistance as long as the MDF is intact. However, any cuts, drilling or damage would impact the rating in that spot.
What thickness options are available?
We offer fire-rated MDF in 12mm and 18mm thicknesses.
