Use a power saw with an abrasive disc or a plasma cutter to make straight cuts through mild steel sheet. For curves or irregular shapes, use an angle grinder with a thin cutting disc. Clamp the sheet securely, mark cut lines, then cut slowly through the metal, supporting the offcut to avoid damaging the blade or disc.
To bend mild steel sheet, use a sheet metal brake or folder to make sharp, clean bends. Secure the sheet in the folder, align it with the bend line, then slowly bring down the clamping bar to crease the sheet to the desired angle. For tighter radius bends, use a sheet metal slip roll to gradually roll the sheet through rotating steel rolls.
The main difference between mild steel sheet and plate is thickness. Generally, sheet metal is under 6mm thick, while plate is 6mm or more. Sheets are usually easier to fabricate, being thinner, while the thicker plates provide increased strength and rigidity. Both sheet and plate can be cut, welded, and fabricated, but require different tools and techniques.
The required thickness of your steel sheet will depend on what you intend to use it for. Generally, thinner sheets are easier to fabricate, while thicker sheets are stronger with a better load-beading capacity.
